The Word Eve in American English

Do you know what the word eve means?  Have you speculated about it?  Did you check into it?

We all know about Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.  Some of us know that Halloween is the eve of All Saints’ Day.  But what does the word stand for exactly?  Does it carry the meaning “the day before” as it may imply?   Or maybe it denotes something else?

How about the other eve, the Eve with capital E, the female name?  Is it just an empty word or does it have a real significant meaning that can be translated into American English?  It turns out it does.  The ancient Hebrew name Eve means Life in contemporary modern American English.

The movie “All About Eve” based on the 1946 novel “The Wisdom of Eve” by Mary Orr is one of the best and most popular movies of all times in the USA.  It is a classic and a cult movie comparable to the first-date-at-home hit “Casablanca” of 1942 with Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.

Enjoy your movies!  Happy Eves and the days after the eves and with Eves!
